The infrastructure capabilities form the base communication and resource management capabilities of the BREIN framework. In order to maintain the dynamic of Virtual Organisations, it is necessary to realise a layer that allows for flexible instantiation, reconfiguration of resources and according message treatment. This building block addresses the full scope related to these aspects, including:

  • Virtualisation and encapsulation of resources so as to expose aggregated functionalities in a stable manner, even if the underlying setup changes
  • Resource instantiation and maintenance coupled with the messaging system so as to ensure reachability, availability and reliability in a dynamic fashion
  • Infrastructure configuration support that respects the fact that business relationships in a Virtual Organisation are legally binding
  • A means to distribute status information in an event-like fashion
  • A means to log interactions for later reference

Infrastructure capabilities hence do not comprise a single “closed” set of functionalities, but a conglomeration of individual functionalities that can principally be used separately from each other, according to the SOA approach.
